Patronymic Tree of Gérald DARMANIN

The DARMANIN and CARUANA Families in Tunisia
Spiridione DARMANIN and Carmela CARUANA, the great-grandparents of Gérald DARMANIN, married in La Goulette in 1893.
Their families, originally from Cospicua and Mdina respectively, must have arrived in Tunisia around 1880.
The couple "Spiridione x Carmela" had at least one son: Rocco, born in Béjà in 1902. He would leave Tunisia for France before 1926. His father Spiridione died in Tunisia in 1939.
Gérald's Maltese family (3 generations) was therefore present in Tunisia for a period of approximately 50 years.

The Maltese of Tunisia
There are numerous works on the presence of the Maltese in Tunisia.
Hatem BOURIAL wrote several articles on webdo.tn about the Maltese Colony, including "The first Maltese of Tunisia" (See Appendix F) and also "Of Maltese memory", which is indexed on Geneanum-Tunisie: https://www.geneanum.com/tunisie/documents/de-memoire-maltaise.html
Alfonso CAMPISI in "My Odysseys in the Mediterranean" (See Appendix G) discusses the migration of the Maltese to North Africa. He places the first movements in the 1820-1830 period.
The migrants arrived directly either at Porto Farina (near Bizerte), or at Tunis, Sousse, Sfax or even Djerba.

After the establishment of the Protectorate in 1881, there were also migrations to Tunisia of Maltese initially settled in Algeria in the 19th century. This was the case of the ATTARD family, originally from Bordj-Bou-Arreridj (A), who settled in 1930 in El Mahrine (T) and the FABRI family, originally from La Calle (A) who settled around 1940 in Tébourba (T)
Numerous books tell the story of Maltese families who emigrated to Tunisia.
We propose 6 of them in Appendix H.

In Geneanum-Malte, one can read an excellent article by Andrea L. SMITH, entitled "The Maltese in Tunisia on the Eve of the Protectorate": https://www.geneanum.com/malte/documents/histoire/les-maltais-en-tunisie-a-la-veille-du-protectorat.html
In this article, reference is made to an article from "La Dépêche Tunisienne" of 1897 which expresses the goodwill of the French towards Maltese migrants.
