History
Birkirkara is one of the oldest in the country, already appearing in the Ecclesiastical Report of 1436 which established the parishes of Malta and Gozo; at the time it happened to be the largest parish.
Several parishes effectively emerged from Birkirkara over the years, including Sliema, San Ġiljan, Msida and Ħamrun in the XIXth century, as well as Santa Venera at the beginning of the XXth century. More recently, San Ġwann was established in 1965 and the hamlet of Tal-Ibragg was separated from Birkirkara to become part of the new parish of Swieqi in 1993.
