History

The name Isla derives from the Italian word Isola meaning island, because the place was once an island. This island was formerly, during the time of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, joined to Bormla by a land bridge, giving it the shape of a peninsula. At that time, Isla was also a hunting ground, known as Isola di San Giuliano, later developed and made habitable by Grand Master La Sengle, who had the fortifications erected after the Turkish invasion of 1551 and who gave his name to the town, and its inhabitants are known as Sengleani. Isla is particularly known for its miraculous statue of Jesus Christ the Redeemer, located in the oratory of the basilica dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
