Hamrun

Overview

Il-Ħamrun, also known as Ħamrun, is a town in the inner harbour region of Malta, with a population of over 11,000 inhabitants.

In the mid-XIX^th century, the area began to develop and was known as St Joseph Village (Casale San Giuseppe). The main street is still called St Joseph Street to this day. In 1875, a new church, dedicated to St Cajetan, opened its doors and was elevated to parish status in 1881, thus becoming a village in its own right. In that same decade, the government decreed that the village should adopt its popular name, Ħamrun, as its official name.
