Hamrun
Overview
Il-Ħamrun, also known as Ħamrun, is a town in the inner harbour region of Malta, with a population of over 11,000 inhabitants.
In the mid-XIXth century, the area began to develop and was known as St Joseph Village (Casale San Giuseppe). The main street is still called St Joseph Street to this day. In 1875, a new church, dedicated to St Cajetan, opened its doors and was elevated to parish status in 1881, thus becoming a village in its own right. In that same decade, the government decreed that the village should adopt its popular name, Ħamrun, as its official name.
