History

As with several other Maltese localities, the history of Siġġiewi is marked by the arrival of the Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in 1530. At that time, there were already several small hamlets in the area; gradually, Ħal Xluq, Ħal Kbir, Ħal Niklusi and Ħal Qdieri were absorbed by Siġġiewi, and today only their chapels betray their past existence.

On 30 December 1797, following a formal request by Don Salvatore Curso, on behalf of his parishioners, Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch promoted the village to the rank of city by giving it his name, Città Ferdinand.

The ruins of the old parish church dedicated to St Nicholas of Bari are still visible today. The Baroque church dedicated to the same saint was erected by working villagers who collected the necessary funds from 1676 to 1693.
