Zabbar

Overview

Locality of Zabbar in Malta

Ħaż-Żabbar, also known as Żabbar, is the sixth largest city in Malta with just over 15,000 inhabitants.

Originally a part of Zejtun, Żabbar was granted the title of Citta Hompesch by the last of the Grand Masters of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem to rule over Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch.

The city is very devout, particularly to Our Lady of Graces, to whom the city's sanctuary is dedicated.

History

After the French occupation of Malta, the Maltese population in general quickly became discontented with its rulers and rebelled. A memorable battle took place in front of the Sanctuary of Żabbar. Since that day, cannonballs from the French era can be seen in the walls of some houses in the oldest parts of the city, and some are housed in the church museum after having been removed from the dome of the old church.
