The census of 1872 in Algeria

French Algeria comprised the 3 departments of Oran, Alger and Constantine
It was in eastern Algeria, that is in the Constantinois, that the Maltese primarily settled. Bône was known as the "Capital of the Maltese."
"Intermarriages" between the different communities were a factor of integration. The shared heritage, similar customs, and a single religion facilitated this blending in which the Maltese were an essential component.
Approximately 1 in 2 Maltese married a foreign person.
In 1904, out of 96 marriages of naturalized Maltese, 47 took place with young women of the same blood and therefore 49 with foreigners (French, Spanish, Italian, etc.)
Assimilation through intermarriage was significant, all the more so as the French language served as the common vehicle for both spouses and their children.
| Departments | ORAN | ALGER | CONSTANTINE |
| Number of foreigners | 47433 | 42181 | 25355 |
| Number of Maltese | 235 | 2971 | 8355 |
